MD’s Audition message, Jekyll & Hyde

A message from Trish Gaskell, our Musical Director:

Jekyll & Hyde is a vocally demanding show and the ability and stamina required should not be underestimated. For this reason, we have set more musical numbers for audition purposes than usual particularly for Jekyll. Music is available together with a CD of the correct version of the audition pieces.  Care should be taken if candidates refer to You Tube, DVDs or CDs of the show to learn audition pieces, because there are various versions of some of the numbers. The audition panel will only be prepared to hear the correct version of the audition pieces set. Please note that candidates may not be required to sing the entirety of all the numbers set. The audition panel will indicate which song is required (an indication is given below) in its entirety and then candidates will be asked to perform selected passages from other numbers set. Please do not ask the audition panel to consider alteration of any of the original key signatures as because of the nature and flow of the music for this show and each characters vocal range throughout the show, we are looking for candidates who can present and perform the numbers in the original keys.

Jekyll

The whole of ‘This is the Moment’ will be sung and then the audition panel will ask candidates to sing specific sections from the other numbers, initially ‘The Confrontation’ then possibility others dependent upon the execution of the initial work, as required to determine vocal ability and range. The audition panel will be looking for difference in vocal timbre to depict and characterise each of the two personalities, Jekyll and Hyde. Candidates who achieve this satisfactorily will then be asked to sing a run of the audition pieces to determine vocal placement and stamina.

Lucy

The whole of ‘A New Life’ will be required then sections of ‘Bring on the Men’. It is expected that candidates will demonstrate use and control of their ‘belt’ and ‘mix’ ranges particularly in ‘A New Life’

Candidates who demonstrate these skills, will be asked to sing ‘In this Eyes’ with an Emma.

Emma

The whole of ‘Once Upon a Dream’ will be required and then requested sections of ‘His Work’ and possibility ‘Take me as I am’. It is expected that candidates will demonstrate vocal poise and an ‘upper class’ inflection.

Candidates who demonstrate the required skills will be asked to sing ‘In his Eyes’ with a Lucy.

Any candidates who have any queries about anything in advance of the audition can ring Trish Gaskell to discuss (077125 88649).
